SKYPE PROGRAM OUTLINE

Le Grand Chic Italia School of Fashion
Book 1 Basic Pattern Drafting Introduction
This flat pattern making method, which uses cutting-edge techniques, was perfected in Italy and has been used widely in Europe for custom design, couture and tailoring since the 1950's. Students will learn to re-create a style from a sketch or create their own designs and tailor them properly. As students progress through the courses, they will learn to consider design, fabrics, drape, finishing and lines to apply to their sewing techniques.  This is the most comprehensive drafting and sewing course in North America and is taught only at Le Grand Chic Italia School of Fashion and Georgian College, the European Pattern and Garment Making program.
In order to accommodate today’s students teaching is divided between schools; Le Grand Chic Italia provides Skype classes that are private one on one classes between teacher and student in 1- 2 hour sessions where students watch a draft/work and then re-create it, they are assigned homework usually 3 – 4 hours or more of homework for every hour of instruction time.  Exams will be written on an honour system and then mailed to the instructor for evaluation garments will be evaluated using Skype and pictures sent to the instructor.   This system also gives the much needed apprenticeship time and experience allowing students to work immediately following successful completion of the program even during the course of the program due to its part time nature.

The courses for Skype classes are as follows:
001- Pattern Drafting: Skirts
002- Pattern Drafting: Pants
003- Pattern Drafting: Sleeveless Tops and Dresses
004- Pattern Drafting: All About Sleeves
005 -Pattern Drafting: Blouses, Tops and Shirts
006 -Pattern Drafting: Dresses
007 -Pattern Drafting: Classic Tailored Blazers
008 -Tailoring a women’s blazers

This will give the student a Certificate of Completion, certifying the student has the ability to create garments in a professional manner that fit impeccably and are properly finished.Students are evaluated during the course of the program in the form of oral quizzes, written exams and finished garments are also evaluated for fit and finish.

001 Course Descriptions Pattern Drafting: Skirts
Using the Le Grand Chic method, participants learn how to use the tools of the trade to draft straight lines, angles and curves which will be applied to drafting skirt patterns. Starting from pencil skirts and going to an A-Line, wrap, gored, circle skirts along with volants, participants create patterns and muslins in personal sizes. This course is part of a series of courses in pattern drafting and should be taken first.  (8 hours of instruction time using Skype)

002 Pattern Drafting: Pants
Building on the skills learned in Pattern Drafting: Skirts, participants learn how to draft patterns for pants from waistline to hemline including pockets and front fly zippers. Patterns created will include custom fit pants as well as custom fit jeans. This course is second in a series of pattern drafting courses.  (10 hours of instruction time using Skype)

003 Pattern Drafting: Sleeveless Tops and Dresses
Building on the skills learned in drafting skirt and pants patterns, and continuing with the European method, participants learn how to draft patterns for sleeveless tops and simple sleeveless dresses. Patterns drafted increase in complexity, in order to ensure a custom fit like adding darts, and adjusting armholes and necklines for ease of movement as well as taking into account the specific nuances of the wearer’s body. Additionally, different fabrics will be used so that participants understand how to adjust patterns according to fabric characteristics. This course is third in a series of pattern drafting courses.  (10 hours of instruction time using Skype)

004 Pattern Drafting: All About Sleeves
Building on skills learned in Pattern Drafting: Sleeveless Tops and Dresses, participants begin to add sleeves to tops. Various types of sleeves are created including dolman, raglan, set-in, and cap. Drafting patterns for sleeves progresses from short to long sleeves. Participants will draft a top or dress with a sleeve style of their choice. This course is fourth in a series of pattern drafting courses.  (8 hours of instruction time using Skype)

005 Pattern Drafting: Blouses, Tops and Shirts
Building on skills learned in drafting tops and dresses, and continuing with the European method, participants learn to adjust patterns for tops and dresses for different body types. Collars, buttons and buttonholes are introduced to the patterns. A button down shirt with wing collar and princess lines pattern is drafted as well as an asymmetrical top and a man's shirt. This course is fifth in a series of pattern drafting courses.  (10 hours of instruction time using Skype)

006 Pattern Drafting: Dresses
Building on skills learned in Pattern Drafting: Blouses, Tops and Shirts, participants create dress patterns including a strapless dress and an empire cut dress. The custom fit of a dress is studied and adjusting pattern pieces to perfect the fit is learned. This course is sixth in a series of pattern drafting courses.  (10 hours of instruction time using Skype)

007 Pattern Drafting: Classic Tailored Blazers for women
Using skills learned in all previous pattern drafting courses, and continuing to use the European method, participants draft a pattern for a classic tailored blazer. Beginning with the bodice then drafting a two-piece sleeve and a variety of collar styles suitable for blazers, participants create all pattern pieces for a classic blazer. A muslin sample of a blazer is then created. This course is the last course to be taken in a series of pattern drafting courses.  (8 hours of instruction time using Skype)

008 Tailoring a women’s blazer
This course takes the theory learned in the previous drafting course; tailored blazer and puts it into practice, students learn the trade secrets of bespoke tailors how to shape the lapels and collar using a floating canvas.  Students will learn how to install the two piece sleeves and tailor them to hang properly, how to “bag” a lining and finish the blazer like a pro.  This is the culmination of the series and once completed will allow students to go on to book 2 La Modellista.               (10 hours of instruction time using Skype)
