It is with Ann's permission and with great pleasure that I am going to be posting her progress with the skype classes. What started out as a pie-in-the-sky idea is now a reality; Ann started with the skirts section of book 1 a few weeks ago in one hour, weekly sessions; successfully completing it although I am still waiting for the final exam to arrive by mail so I can grade it..... I'm sure she passed with flying colours!
Today was our first day of the pants section- the pants front. This was Ann's introduction to my now famous or infamous storyboard format of learning! My theory is that repetition is the key to success therefore I break down the drafts into steps having the students draft each step until they complete the task. By the time the students have repeated the draft 5 times it is clear how it must be done with the added benefit of having a step by step reference for future use. It is very tedious to do them and everyone complains, Ann did not, at least not audibly :) but in the end they see the benefits. In fact one of the intermediate students said she pulls it out all the time when starting something new for accuracy especially if it's been a while since last drafted a particular garment.
With Ann we skype once a week for 2 hours now for the pants section as it is more complex than a skirt, on my end I show the draft on a white board plus have samples of patterns and from her end she positions the webcam so that I can see what she is drafting, works great!
So in keeping with the other students your homework is to draft 2 more pants front; one using your own measurements and one using a different set of measurements to show me next Friday at which time we will be covering the pants back. So please have 5 more sheets of paper cut and ready to go for more fun storyboards!
Have a great week!
