Hello all just an update for this Thursday November 28, picture day! I asked to photographers what was needed for the studio shots and this is their answer:
"So they do not need to model their items, we will just be doing table
top product shots. And they do not have to do anything but bring in their items
on thursday when they are coming into the class or on Friday at 5pm to our shoot
in the studio and let us know when they want to pick them back up
Please bring anything you like in for a picture and leave it with them on Thursday if you can't come back on Friday and then pick them up next week during the last class.
Ciao and have a great week!
Hello all for this week you are to create a semi-circle skirt using your waist measurement if you didn't do it in class, if you did congrats you don't have homework!
Please study for the final exam next week our final class :( Don't know how it went by so quickly it seems we started yesterday and boom it's over!
Next week is the
final exam, closed book drafting bring coloured pencils paper etc.
please study the base draft of a pencil, A-line, tapered and bias/godet
skirts as well as the notches, grainlines and any notations required on the
pattern draft. You will also need
to know the circle, semi-circle skirt formulas and Volant and to create a legend
on the side of the paper showing the colours used for which lines.
It will help you greatly if you create the above patterns without looking at the book, use generic measurements if you like this is only for practice, once finished look back at the book and try to grade your patterns just to see what you need to learn before the exam, it's worth 90% of your final mark. The most important thing is to relax and don't second guess yourself in my experience your first instinct is usually the right one.
Have a great week!
Hello all, sorry for the delay in writing......
There are only 2 weeks left in this class :( I have so much fun teaching this great group of women who really challenge me to think outside the box, I return the favour as well giving them all kinds of challenges and they exceed my expectations without fail!
For this week you are to finish cutting the gored skirt and possibly stitch it together ready to fit it in class. If you choose to line it please have the lining cut and sewn as well. We will be adding the zipper, waistband and hemming in class.
THIS WEEK THERE WILL BE PHOTOGRAPHERS COMING TO TAKE SOME PICTURES. Please wear garments that were created in previous classes and they will also need some volunteers for Friday to take some in studio pix. Volunteers will receive copies of the professional pix free of charge!
The last class we will be covering some draping using a skirt as an example.
Have a great rest of the week hopefully without much more snow!
Hello all! FANTASTIC JOB TODAY!
I am blown away by how well this class is doing! Congrats you deserve it!!
No class next week :( we all get a break :)
For the next class in two weeks please bring in fabric for a circle skirt and a bias skirt. It is your decision if you want to do a full circle or semi-circle skirt as described in the syllabus:
· Circle skirt
Students pick which style they would like to make, they must pick the correct fabric for the choice of skirt
Can be made with only one seam at the centre back or side
Waistline will be finished with a waistband
Hemline will be a rolled edge
· Students will use pattern created in previous class for this project
· Skirt will be cut on the bias for students to understand how the stretch will affect the outcome
· Waistline will be finished with facings and a side/back zipper depending on fabric
Hemline will be blind stitched (slip stitched by hand)
Have a great two weeks!!!
Hello all not sure what happened on Friday but not many people were in attendance....... Hope all is well......
For this week we covered the skirts with a box pleat, knife pleat and a wrap skirt on pages 24 - 25. They are created with a base back and then traced with the movements shown on page 25 at the centre front. So far you have done most of the work on the back, these styles are different as the work is mostly on the front. Please note the plumb lines at the centre front (1 cm to the left of the centre front) for the proper hang when wearing the skirt.
The marks for the test are on Blackboard so please log on to get your grades, I will have the tests next week to return to the missing students.
For this week your homework is as follows:
Have a great week
Hello all I am sure you will enjoy this week without any homework, you all worked so hard and handed in your homework assignments on time that you deserved a break!
The class also decided they want to go ahead with the gored skirt challenge cutting the pieces on the bias to create a different look, the class has been working on this for some time now and should be ready to start this challenge this coming week. Students were given a choice to use either a plaid or create their own print by either painting it or appliqueing it on the pieces prior to sewing the skirt. It will be interesting to see what the students come up with so please bring in your pattern and fabric for this skirt. Whether or not it is lined is a personal decision, a zipper or elastic waist is also a choice based on the fabric used. Students will have two weeks to complete this task and have it graded when finished.
The final class will consist of some draping techniques, something that is not on the syllabus but will be very useful for the fashion show garment.
Have a great week!
Hello all great job on Saturday! There was one student who totally finished her gored skirt and was gone by 3:00 pm one full hour before the end of class! Another one finished not one but two skirts including the hem slipstitched by hand! Perhaps I am being to easy on this group of talented ladies :)
Your homework is only to finish the hem if you haven't already done so in class.
For next week we will be sewing a wrap skirt that is lined so you will need fabric, lining, buttons. Please remember you will need twice as much fabric as the length of the skirt so if you want a longer skirt take the length into account and purchase two times that length, also the lining.
I am totally blown away by the speed and focus in this "beginner" class! Keep it up!
Hello all no need for me to go over the homework, you already know what to do! Have a great week!
Hello ladies and can I say what a great job you all did last night in class! I am so proud of this class that I tell anyone who will listen about you :)
Back to reality, your homework for this week is to finish the pleated skirt (if you set a soft deadline of last week you should be done by now!) and hand it in on Thursday. The other thing is the godet skirt handout I gave at the beginning of the course from the old book two with the circular cuts and only one vertical seam at the centre back. I had the pattern in class last night and we briefly discussed it, I would not allow pictures of the pattern because this is an assignment that I want done strictly from the sketches on the sheets, the fact the writing is in Italian is of no consequence at this point students should be able to look at the graphic and figure out the pattern. This is due on Thursday as well and is worth 10% of the final mark. Please be on time with both of these assignments or there will be consequences.
The other thing we covered in class was the circle skirts and we are doing a mock up of the red fit and flare skirt on page 27. Please finish the pattern using the measurements provided in class 60 cm waist, 75 cm hips and the skirt length of 36 or 37 (whichever you used will be fine) unless you want to use your own measurements, most of the class had already finished this pattern...... So for next week please bring in your pattern, fabric for a mock up, fabric for lining, zipper etc. I will show you how to line this skirt and we can also discuss more lining techniques if you like so bring your questions as well as extra fabric and zippers! I look forward to the discussion. Please note the class will start promptly at 7:00pm
For the circle skirt on page 26 I believe the only thing left for most to do is the final Volant, you can do this whenever you get a chance and it is not due in class but make sure it gets done so you can have a good reference.
ciao and have a great week. Mona good luck on Sunday I will do my best to get down there to see your window, great accomplishment for you! Kudos!!!
Hello again! Just a reminder about the quiz on Friday please study your terminology, the pattern draft and look carefully at the differences/similarities between the various drafts that we have taken in class so far. Also the measurement chart handed out the first night and of course the squares used to draft the patterns. This quiz is worth 10% of the final mark.
