GREAT JOB SATURDAY STUDENTS!

10/31/2011

Congratulations to my first skirts sewing class!  The students did a FANTASTIC job, they completely finished a skirt they could wear that evening!  If fact one of the girls wore hers home.
For next week we will be creating a lined wrap skirt.  So you are to bring the fabric (2 heights, so however long you want the skirt, buy twice as much), lining (same rule as the fabric) and buttons of your choice to class along with the rest of things you brought last week.
I will leave it up to you if you would like a solid colour or a print/border of your choice.  Remember when purchasing a print that it must be lined up on the skirt.  Please do not purchase a plaid for this project, that will be for the bias

  • Homework - module 1; week 2

    10/25/2011

Hello all, great class last night!  Your homework for this week is to cut and mark the muslin with tailor tacks as shown in class.  Please bring in your sewing machines to stitch the skirt pieces together and be fit.  We will try the skirts on, pin where (if) necessary and then transfer the markings to the paper pattern.

Next class will be on the bias skirt as well.

    back from the Festival

    10/24/2011

It is an exhausting, exhilirating experience being at the Creativ Needlework Festival!  Can't figure out if I am more tired than happy or vice versa.  The students created the impossible in only 3 days, a gown that fit perfectly, a coat edged in faux fur and embroidered, a hat with embroidery and jewels, fingerless gloves and even a ring!  Faculty advisors are not allowed to touch anything during the competition so this morning when I picked up the coat I was shocked how heavy it is with the volume of fabric and the fur trim, the girls not only tested their sewing skills but got a work out as well!  I am so incredibly proud of Amy and Denise there are no words to accurately describe it.  Against all odds they finished the work with some help from Dora and Joanne.  Thank you to all who participated and/or attended.

Next year we will win no question!

Thank you to the ladies who attended my Marfy class for next year we can maybe do a complete garment over a period of days.  Please send me your comments/suggestions and I will take them into consideration

Homework and exam preparation for the final week of module 5

    10/20/2011

Hello all can you believe this is going to be our last week of this module!  I can't time sure flies when you are having fun!

For the exam I would like you to prepare a jacket bodice front and back complete with adjustments ready to have sleeves and collar created in class.  Bring extra paper to trace over a Dolman sleeve from the pre-made pattern, this exercise is to see if the base draft jumps out at you even on a finished pattern.  Do not add any front overlap it will be done in class when adding the shawl collar.  Remember to memorize the movements as it will be a closed book exam.

Use the following measurements to create your front and back going only to the hipline.

    1/2 bust          46                                     1/2 waist         42

    1/2 hips           50                                     front neck-waist 46

    back neck-waist 44                                1/2 shoulder width 18

    1/2 back width  17                                   armhole circ.        48

    bust height         31                                  1/2 bust distance   10

Good Luck everyone, but you don't need luck, you know all the work already!

    Homework week 1 - module 1

    10/18/2011

Hello and congratulations on a job well done last night!  For this week your homework is to try and figure out the tapered skirt on your own.  Don't fret if you can't figure it out, write down any questions that arise and ask them in class.  There may be others with the same questions and the best way to figure out what is not clear is to do it on your own.

For next week please bring in some muslin/broadcloth/cheap fabric to cut out a pencil skirt also a basic sewing kit but no machines yet.

Have a great week and best of luck to team D.A.F.T. at the festival!

    Homework module 5 week 6

    10/13/2011

Wow it's hard to believe there are only 2 more classes left!  This module just FLEW by!  So your homework this week is to create the jacket on page 71, master front and back, trace the lining pieces and mark with grainlines names etc, re-create the sleeve with the off-set seam as shown on page 71.

Keep up the good work!  I must say how proud I am of this class, students are very good to each other and respectful of one another.

Can't wait for the Festival coming up next week we are ready, Team Georgian has been assembled, the challenge has been issued, we are good to go!!!!

    Homework week 5, module 5

    10/6/2011

Hello all and congratulations on a job well done last night!  I saw very few errors on the drafts.  I do believe the information is jelling in the brains!  For your homework this week please create a third collar using the base that was created in class.  Pick any option except for the 2 flat collars on the bottom left hand side of page 72.  If you like you can also create another notched collar as well.  Please be sure that if there was any work not finished in class it is finished at home.
