Check out the helpful hints

8/24/2011

I have been researching pants fit and applying practical applications to my research and have come up with a solution to one problem, too much fabric at the centre back, I only hope that I explained it well enough to be understood.....
I am very happy to see more people signed up for the skirts module!  This time there will be the sewing to compliment the drafting, can't wait to see the results of students' creativity.
Coming soon some beginner courses at Le Grand Chic Italia!  Keep you posted.

COURSE CALENDARS ARE AVAILABLE FOR GEORGIAN COLLEGE

8/21/2011

As I had said earlier, registration is now open for Georgian College and classes start very soon.  Modules 5 and 6 will be completed this fall so students will be able to finish the drafting sections of book 1 very quickly!  The sewing will take a little more time and I find people are more interested in fitting than anything, that is the most important aspect of custom garment making.  I teach what to look for and how to fix fit issues such as one hip higher than the other, gaping neckline, larger upper arm, pants that don't fit and the list goes on.  I will try and post some hints in the future, it's much harder to try and explain the solution than to to show the solution.  Eventually I will try and post videos, try and ba

new school

8/19/2011

The new school is up and running, yesterday my sign went up and it felt GREAT to see it writing!  I will be working on a curriculum for late September/early October start.  There will be a mix of classes, some for the general public and some only for students interested in the Italian diploma.  It should be interesting to say the least....
I have some samples on display in the windows, I have to keep changing them as the sun really wreaks havoc on the fibres... the natural light is amazing to work in, I must say.
For beginners I am considering having classes on how to use your serger effectively, how to better understand fabrics and their characteristics, this may be a seminar type class with a guest speaker if I am lucky enough to book her.  This project is getting so exciting!
Got to go now and get started, if there are any suggestions/requests for classes please use the contact us form and I will consider your request.
ciao

module 5 students

8/9/2011

Hello students, just wante to let you know that you will need to practice, practice, practice your bodice drafts!  Please time yourself and try to draft a front and back in less than half an hour.  This is the key to being successful in module 5, there is a lot of material to cover in a short period of time.  Be sure you understand the drafts and your adjustments very well.  Don't say you haven't been warned!  You will thank me in the end!

Great time at Le Grand Chic Italia!

8/4/2011

We had a great time and learned a lot at the new school!  The change room is HUGE!  A nice big mirror lots of natural light what more can we ask for?!  This is probably one of the most exciting adventures of my life to open a school of my own!  The students who attended my first classes were very happy and learned a lot, too bad we are very far away and can't get together often....  I am currently working on the fall curriculum and some workshops for the more advanced sewers.  Once students learn the pattern draft and see how the garment should fall there is no going back!

The draft and construction are the very basis of fashion arts and should be taught the way they are taught in Europe, with patience and an eye for fine details and a lot of hand sewing.  That is what I am trying to accomplish with this school.  The overseas courses there are very lengthy and focus on the garment construction, this is much closer to home, a huge savings financially.
What a bonus to get the same education without incurring all the huge expenses!
